Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
