Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
